FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
I’d like to discuss a member benefit that we don’t talk about a lot. We don’t talk about it even a little bit - and we should. I’m referring to how the Club subsidizes ticket prices so members pay less to attend Club events. We receive our funds from two sources, sponsor fees and new memberships. What we do with our money is pretty simple. We have fixed monthly operating expenses,
and other variable expenses such as printing, meeting supplies, small equipment, etc., but the bulk of our funds go to our charitable work and event subsidies. Going forward it will be more heavily weighted toward event subsidies. Event subsidies vary by event, but can be a couple hundred baht or more per person. The idea behind subsidies is to keep the cost as low as possible for members, to enable as many people as possible to attend. The more expensive the
event, the greater the subsidy. Take the recent picnic for example. The actual cost of the event was almost 950 baht per person, we subsidized 200 baht per person, reducing the ticket cost by 21%. The idea is to have a variety of events over the year so there’s something for everybody, and maintain a balance between low-cost and more expensive events. Subsidies are the best way we have to make all our events more affordable without sacrificing the quality of
them. One other thing we do, which can be confused with subsidies, is we sometimes offer a special price to non-members. It’s not a subsidy, it’s an recruiting expense if you will, designed to encourage non-members to attend with the hope they will then want to join the club. It doesn’t take a lot of new members at 1500 baht to offset the expense, so it basically pays for itself over time. What it boils down to is that the combination of subsidies and
“recruiting expense” is an important tool. We’re going to start being more open about our subsidies, by letting you know what the club contribution is for each event. Our Expat Connection meetings are the one event we typically don’t subsidize—because our fantastic partnership with the Duangtawan Hotel keeps them wonderfully affordable for everyone. We don’t contribute to the Saturday Breakfast at The Duke’s either, that’s entirely handled by The Duke’s, and the
discount for members is offered by them, not us. They’ve been one of our most steadfast sponsors for a great many years, keep them in mind the next time you’re wondering where to go for lunch or dinner! All other club events will be subsidized to some degree, and we’ll give you the details as each event comes along. Just remember, they are fueled primarily by our sponsors, show your gratitude by supporting them whenever you can. OK, just a couple of event
announcements before I go. The next Saturday Breakfast is coming up on March 7th, reservations are now being taken. See the article below for details. Also, we have a new little event coming up, and it’s free! Thanks to the folks at Elephant Parade Land, they’ve set aside a day for us to visit and tour their incredible museum and factory, and if you’re so inclined you can try you hand at painting an elephant of your own. There’s a bit more information just below and
a QR code to get more info and sign up. It’s limited to 25 people - don’t hesitate or you’ll miss out! That’s it, have a great week, and please be safe, -Kent P.S. That's not me at the top, that's my boss.
ELEPHANT PARADE LAND TOUR Following our Expat Connection meeting last month, the Elephant Parade has kindly offered to host a private tour for our CEC Members and friends. See the factory, watch the skilled artist's at work and enjoy the museum. If you're really brave, test your talent and paint your own

NEXT EXPAT CONNECTION - MARCH 28 DUANGTAWAN HOTEL - 3RD FLOOR 9:45 - 10:30 - Coffee/Tea/Snacks/Sponsors 10:30 - 12:00 Meeting
The next Expat Connection will be Saturday, March 28, at the Duangtawan Hotel. Peter Bell is putting the final touches on the program, the details keep on coming. Thomas Carden, our trusted friend from American International Tax Advisers, will be joining us, and will be bringing another AIT expert on Thai tax issues, Miss Patcha Ingkudanonda. She will discuss the
interpretation of Thai tax law regarding foreign income, ensuring that attendees comprehend that not all funds remitted into Thailand are subject to taxation. Additionally, she will clarify the tax consequences associated with foreigners transferring money to a Thai spouse or partner. Her presentation will be grounded in practical insights derived from actual cases that have been reviewed and audited by the Thai Revenue Department. Consequently, attendees will gain
knowledge of both Thai tax law and international tax treaties. Also on the program, will be our resident scam avoidance artist, Rick Hahn. Scams have been around forever. "Snake-oil salesman" and "smoke and mirrors" are terms from the 1800's. But now the scammers are much better - and have very sophisticated tools. They can find you from the other side of the world. Did you know that the scam Centers just a few hundred miles from here steal over
$10 billion from the people of the United States alone? We will show you how you can avoid becoming a victim. We also have a speaker coming from Bangkok Hospital. Details are coming, but a little birdie said it has to do with vision related to seniors and aging. More on this soon.
