FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Hello everyone, Last month's Expat Connection meeting gave us the opportunity to try something new — at least new to us. The Open Forum segment was inspired by our friends at the expat club in Pattaya, who have used the concept successfully for many years. I’m never shy about borrowing a good idea, but I also believe in giving credit where it’s due, so thank you to Pattaya for the
inspiration. As expected, it took a little time for everyone to warm up to the format, but once people settled in, the conversation became thoughtful and engaging. By the end, when I asked whether members wanted Open Forum to become a regular part of our meetings, the response was an emphatic yes. Message received. One discussion in particular left me both pleased and somewhat concerned. I asked whether members preferred our current bi-monthly meeting
schedule or whether they would like to return to monthly meetings, as we did before 2025. The response was overwhelming in favor of monthly meetings. On one hand, that was encouraging because it clearly showed how much people value these gatherings and enjoy being part of the club. On the other hand, it highlighted an ongoing challenge we continue to face. Over the last six months, much of the energy behind these meetings came from Peter Bell, who took ownership of organizing
them and did a tremendous job. His efforts helped make the meetings successful, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone. With Peter now focusing his attention on the Children’s Sight Project, those responsibilities have shifted to me. Organizing six major meetings each year is already a significant commitment. Expanding that to ten is possible, but only if more members are willing to share the workload. Yes, we are looking to hire a clerical assistant, but the work necessary to
execute all of our events still falls on us. So, it's pretty simple, if you want us to do more things you can't just sit back and expect others to make it happen. Let's be honest, the club has accomplished a great deal since last August. We’ve stabilized and strengthened the organization in ways that should make all of us proud. We now host roughly 20 events annually, our finances are healthy, membership is growing again, our website is dramatically improved, and newsletter readership has
increased by more than 30% since the beginning of the year. The future of the club is bright — but we must build that future together. The reality is that our club depends entirely on members giving a little of their time. Those of us who stepped forward to keep the organization alive did so because we cared deeply about preserving the club, not because we wanted to carry the burden indefinitely. Burnout is real, especially in a club made up largely of retirees who joined to
enjoy the social and community aspects of expat life, not to take on another responsibility. This is not “my” club or the board’s club. It belongs to all of us. If we want more activities, more meetings, and continued growth, then we also need more people willing to contribute time, ideas, and effort. Even small contributions can make a meaningful difference. The enthusiasm for expanding our meetings was wonderful to see, my hope is that enthusiasm will translate into members
stepping forward to help make it possible. I, for one, would be extremely grateful. And finally, a reminder that our next Saturday Breakfast at The Duke’s Ruamchok is coming up this Saturday.
