FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Hello everyone, I hope you enjoyed Cinco de Mayo. Interestingly, it's one of those holidays that tends to grow a bit larger with time. It’s often mistaken for Mexico’s official Independence Day (actually Sept. 16th), but instead marks the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In a result that probably raised a few eyebrows
at the time, Mexico, with a smaller, under-equipped force defeated what was then considered to be one of the best armies in the world. Not exactly the outcome the French had penciled in for the day. Oops! Back in Mexico, it remains a relatively modest historical observance. Elsewhere, however, it has evolved into something a bit more enthusiastic—part cultural celebration, part social occasion, and occasionally part test of good judgment. Still, at its core, it’s a reminder
that even the long shots can come through now and then. Depending on the week you’ve had, that might be reason enough to take note. Following up on my last message about the club’s challenges and the idea of bringing on an assistant, I want to thank everyone who took the time to write in. I have to admit, I was both surprised and pleased by how many of you responded—clearly, people were paying attention. Even more surprising (and reassuring) was that nearly all those who
replied were in favor of the idea. In today’s world, getting that kind of agreement on anything short of the weather is no small feat. All joking aside, that kind of clear and supportive feedback is extremely helpful, and it gives us added confidence that this is a step in the right direction for the club. A quick note about the Saturday Breakfast—specifically, reservations. As most of you know, the restaurant goes above and beyond for us, opening early and preparing an entire
buffet that isn’t even part of their regular menu. It’s a terrific spread, but also one that requires a bit of planning on their end. While we completely understand the occasional last-minute decision to join (we’ve all been there), we do seem to have an expanding group of “I was always coming, I just didn’t bother to tell anyone” attendees. Unfortunately, that makes it much harder to get the numbers right, it's unfair to the restaurant, and potentially negatively impacts the
members who made reservations. So, as a small favor that makes a big difference, if you know you’re coming please make a reservation. It's easy, you'll even get a confirmation, and best of all you'll save 100 baht. It also helps the kitchen, it helps the staff, and it helps ensure there’s enough of that fabulous bacon to go around—which, as many of you have made very clear to us over the years, is not something to be taken lightly! Looking ahead, our next Expat
Connection meeting is coming up soon, on the 23rd. We’re in the process of lining up a presentation on the fascinating subject of stem cell therapy—more details to follow as that comes together. We’ll also be giving a couple of our newer sponsors a few minutes to introduce themselves and share a bit about what they do, which should be a nice way for our members to get better acquainted with them. And, borrowing a good idea from our friends at the Pattaya Expat Club, we’re going to set
aside some time for open discussion. This will give members the chance to ask questions of the board or other members, raise club-related topics, or bring up anything they think might be of interest. We’ll keep things moving by limiting individual speaking time, and there will also be room for some back-and-forth. It’s worked very well for them, we’re hopeful it will be an entertaining and valuable addition for us as well. Thanks for your support of the club, and please be
safe. -Kent
