FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Hello everyone, Sometimes the biggest changes come not when things are going badly, but when things are going well and we want to make sure they stay that way. That’s where our club finds itself today. Many of the systems and expectations we still operate under were built during a very different time. In the years before COVID, Chiang Mai had a larger and faster-growing expat community.
New people were arriving regularly, membership was expanding, and many members naturally stepped forward to volunteer. Helping with the club was often one of the best ways to meet people, make friends, and become part of the community. Fresh faces brought fresh energy and ideas, and leadership renewal happened much more easily. Then the world changed. Like so many organizations, we felt the effects of COVID. Some longtime members moved away and never returned. Seasonal
residents and part-time visitors became fewer. New retirees arriving in Chiang Mai slowed significantly. While our club remained strong in spirit, the environment around us changed in ways that continue to affect us today. The result is simple: we now ask a smaller group of people to do the work that was once shared by many. That’s not a criticism of anyone. It’s simply the reality of where we are, and it does create a challenge. When too much responsibility falls on too few
people, burnout becomes a real risk. No organization stays healthy for long following that path. The good news is that the club itself is in excellent condition. In fact, financially we are probably in the strongest position we’ve been in for many years. We’ve worked through difficult periods, turned important corners, and created real stability. That gives us something valuable: the ability to plan for the future instead of only reacting to the
present. After careful consideration, I’ve decided to ask the board to take a practical step forward. I’m going to ask them to create a part-time paid administrative support position to assist with many of the routine tasks that consume time and energy behind the scenes. This position, under Thai law, must be filled by a Thai national. This role is not about replacing volunteers or changing the spirit of our club. It’s about supporting the volunteers
we do have, reducing pressure on board members, improving continuity, and helping the club continue to grow in a sustainable way. It will allow our leadership to focus less on small daily chores and more on serving members, creating good events, and guiding the club’s future. I know this is something new for us, and thoughtful change always deserves thoughtful discussion. I’m making you aware of this now so that you, too, can weigh in. I’d love to hear from you, please direct
your comments or suggestions to me personally at [email protected]. I will share more details as they develop, and I hope you'll see this decision in the same spirit in which it is being made: protecting what we've built, strengthening what we do well, and preparing responsibly for the years ahead. Thank you, as always, for your support of the club, and please be safe. -Kent
