FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Hello everyone, If you’ve spent any time in Chiang Mai, you already know we’ve entered the season no one looks forward to — the smoky season. It’s not new, it’s not unexpected, and unfortunately it’s part of the annual cycle of life here in Northern Thailand. That doesn’t make it pleasant, but it does make it something we need to understand, prepare for, and hopefully manage
sensibly. This year has been especially difficult. We’ve had no rain at all to help clear the air, and without it the smoke has simply lingered, and accumulated. As a result, we’ve been dealing with several consecutive weeks of unhealthy particulate levels, most days being in the dangerous range. I hear it all the time, this season feels more severe than most in recent memory. The causes are varied and not limited to one source. Agricultural burning remains
the major contributor, particularly the clearing of leftover corn and sugar cane residue after harvest. Forest underbrush burning adds to the problem. In addition, Chiang Mai does not exist in a bubble. Air currents carry smoke from neighboring countries, primarily Myanmar and Laos, with some impact from Cambodia as well. That means local efforts alone cannot solve the problem. Authorities continue working on enforcement, prevention, and regional cooperation, but this challenge is bigger than
any one city. It’s also worth keeping our perspective. Every place in the world has something residents learn to live with. Some areas deal with hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, heavy snow, flooding, or perhaps extreme heat or cold. Here in Chiang Mai, one of those seasonal challenges is smoke. It’s inconvenient, frustrating, and certainly unhealthy when levels are high — but it’s not the full story of life here. Chiang Mai remains a beautiful, welcoming, and remarkable
place to live, and there are many reasons it is so often praised by expats and travelers alike. For now, the best approach is common sense. On heavy smoke days, consider limiting outdoor activity, especially strenuous exercise. Wear a 2.5 mask when outside. Keep windows closed when conditions are poor. Use an air purifier if possible, and pay extra attention if you have asthma, heart or lung conditions, or other health concerns. Most importantly, use good judgment and adjust
your routine when necessary. Like every season, this one will pass. The rains will come, the skies will clear, and Chiang Mai will once again remind us why so many of us choose to call it home. Until then, be smart, take care of yourselves and each other, and especially now, please be safe. -Kent

HAVE SOME FUN - MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Six months ago, the Club faced an existential crisis. A significant number of members came together and said they did not want the Club to dissolve. A core group of these folks agreed to form a new Board and take the club forward. Not only
has this resulted in a sustainable stability (both financially and operationally), we have also had a number of helpers come forward to share the day-to-day workload. This is great! It also gives us an opportunity to think about the future. This future should include new ideas, new leaders, and new vision. Where are these leaders going to come from? I have no doubt that many of you have had thoughts like, “ I wish the Club would do more of
this..” or, “ I wish they wouldn’t do that”…. “. YOU not only have the opportunity to make your voice heard; you can help shape the vision and future of the club. We would love to find a few new Board members to become involved NOW…. When things are running smoothly…. When there is no emergency. You don’t have to “un-retire” to make a big difference! You need to care about the club and you need to be willing to invest a couple of hours a
week. If you would like information on what’s involved with being on the Board, or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Kent at [email protected], or Rick at [email protected].
