FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Hello everyone, Looking forward to our Expat Connection meeting this weekend it occurred to me that a number of our members, especially newer ones, might not be aware of the tax issue we’ve been speaking of, and on which we’ll get the latest update at the meeting. Considering the impact it can have on all of us it’s worth clarifying a bit. A few years ago the Thai government
announced a new law to tax money brought into Thailand from other countries. It was supposed to go into effect almost immediately, and initially it was supposed to apply to everyone. Naturally, since most expats regularly bring money into the country for living expenses, the prospect of having to pay tax on it concerned all of us. In the beginning there was no end of speculation about who was actually affected and who wasn’t, and whether or not it really would go
into affect right away. There were also no end of highly questionable “experts” giving advice…and offering to navigate the process for a fee. No surprise there. Also not surprisingly, most of the information given was highly inaccurate. Thomas Carden, a tax professional and club sponsor, was concerned about the misinformation and offered to advise and guide our members. From the beginning he has helped make sense out of the details, and
calm our nerves. He offered his best opinion on what would happen next, and what wouldn’t, and it turned out he was right on the money (no pun intended). He very quickly earned our trust, and has come back on occasion when there was new information we should be aware of, or rumors that needed to be addressed. As before, his guidance was spot on. It’s been a while since his last update. He had planned to talk to us at our November meeting last year but
had to postpone, and we didn’t have enough time available at our January meeting to do him justice so we asked him to come back this month. It got even better when he decided to bring an associate from his company, AIT, with him, who is an expert on Thai tax law and this issue in particular. This will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date information available anywhere, and they know how it applies to many of the countries represented in our club.
It’s information we can count on, and which we all need to know. If you haven’t made plans to attend this Saturday I strongly urge you to do so. It’s not only good to know what to expect, it can also be crucial to avoiding undue stress and potentially expensive problems. That’s it, be careful in the heat and please be safe, I hope to see you Saturday. -Kent

HAVE SOME FUN - MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Six months ago, the Club faced an existential crisis. A significant number of members came together and said they did not want the Club to dissolve. A core group of these folks agreed to form a new Board and take the club forward. Not only
has this resulted in a sustainable stability (both financially and operationally), we have also had a number of helpers come forward to share the day-to-day workload. This is great! It also gives us an opportunity to think about the future. This future should include new ideas, new leaders, and new vision. Where are these leaders going to come from? I have no doubt that many of you have had thoughts like, “ I wish the Club would do more of
this..” or, “ I wish they wouldn’t do that”…. “. YOU not only have the opportunity to make your voice heard; you can help shape the vision and future of the club. We would love to find a few new Board members to become involved NOW…. When things are running smoothly…. When there is no emergency. You don’t have to “un-retire” to make a big difference! You need to care about the club and you need to be willing to invest a couple of hours a
week. If you would like information on what’s involved with being on the Board, or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Kent at [email protected], or Rick at [email protected].

NEXT EXPAT CONNECTION - MARCH 28 DUANGTAWAN HOTEL - 3RD FLOOR 9:45 - 10:30 - Coffee/Tea/Snacks/Sponsors 10:30 - 12:00 Meeting
Thomas Carden, our trusted friend from American International Tax Advisers, will be joining us, and will be bringing another AIT expert on Thai tax issues, Miss Patcha Ingkudanonda. She will discuss the interpretation of Thai tax law regarding foreign income, ensuring that attendees comprehend that not all funds remitted into Thailand are subject to taxation. Additionally, she will clarify the tax
consequences associated with foreigners transferring money to a Thai spouse or partner. Her presentation will be grounded in practical insights derived from actual cases that have been reviewed and audited by the Thai Revenue Department. Consequently, attendees will gain knowledge of both Thai tax law and international tax treaties.
Also on the program, will be our resident scam avoidance artist, Rick Hahn. Scams have been around forever, "snake-oil salesman" and "smoke and mirrors" are terms from the 1800's. But now the scammers are much better - and have very sophisticated tools. They can find you from the other side of the world. Did you know that the scam Centers just a few hundred miles from here steal over $10
billion from the people of the United States alone? We'll show you how you can avoid becoming a victim.
We also have a speaker coming from Bangkok Hospital, Dr. Chompoonoot Kunaviktikul, to enlighten and educate us about glaucoma. It's definitely something we should all know more about, especially seniors. We've heard she will also be bringing a machine to give anyone a free test before the meeting. Don't worry, it's painless. Finally, please welcome a new sponsor, Serene
Senior Care. They will be there to meet and talk with us during coffee and snacks, and will bring a blood pressure machine in case you missed the last one, or just want a second opinion.
