This week has been a tumultuous week at the Chiangmai Expats Club, with resignations left, right and centre. Kent Lamoreux, Rick Hahn and Bill Wood have resigned with immediate effect leaving the Club very much in limbo. Robert Brake stepped up as President, Chili Humphrey as Secretary, Kathy Osmond heading the Welcoming Committee, Elias Maung leading Programs, Frank Sethi coordinating Community Relations and
Sponsors, and Nigel Dean maintaining our website. We are working to fill more positions shortly. We are facing challenging times as we work to revitalize our club through the transition phase. It is a complicated and time-consuming process so please be patient. Everyone, past and present, is focused on creating a club that is informative, inclusive, and fun!
You may ask: “Who is Robert Brake?”
PROFILE
Q.
Rob why do you want to be President?
A. I believe the CEC provides a much needed service for Expats. I want it to successfully continue doing this.
Q. What experience do you have?
A. I have successfully helped many businesses in many countries and wish to use these skills to return the CEC to its former glory.
Q. The Club has gone downhill for some years now. How do you plan to rejuvenate it?
A. I want to introduce more interesting guest
speakers, provide more regular social events, and welcome more sponsors, who are our life blood.
Q. Who is helping you?
A. I have great help and support from Kathy, Chili, Frank, Nigel and Elias who are all on the Board, plus other volunteers.
Q. How long have you lived in Chiang Mai and where have you come from?
A. I have lived here 15 months now and love it. I have come from New Zealand where I lived for 30 odd years; before that the UK. I moved with my
partner, Christine, with just two suitcases each!
Q. I understand you celebrated your 80th Birthday this week with your 4 adult children visiting from 3 different countries.
A. Yes it was a very happy time for all of us, except for the drama I went through with the CEC during their visit.
Q. What is your immediate concern for the Club?
A. We need to get more Sponsors to boost our funds as they are very low.
Q. What is something you
hate?
A. Insincerity.
Q. And what is one thing you love?
A. Walking the dog in the cool Thai mornings.
Wine Tasting Event
CANCELLATION
Unfortunately because of the turmoil going on with the Club, we are cancelling the wine function to be held April 3rd at Toulou. The Club cannot afford to subsidize functions at this stage until our coffers look a bit healthier. We are actively looking for a more affordable wine tasting option to offer. All paid bookings will be refunded.

SPOTLIGHT on a local place of interest
Bo Sang Umbrella Village
Chiang Mai is renowned for its traditional umbrella-making industry, particularly in the Bo Sang village, located approximately 10 kilometers east of the city. This village has a long-standing tradition of producing hand-made bamboo umbrellas and parasols, a craft that has been passed down through generations. In Bo Sang, visitors can observe artisans crafting umbrellas from start to finish. The
process involves creating the bamboo frame, applying handmade Sa paper, and painting intricate designs. The village is also home to the Bo Sang Handicrafts Centre, where you can learn about the history and techniques of umbrella making.
The painters at Bo Sang, particularly in Bo Sang Umbrella Village, are known for their exceptional artistry and craftsmanship. These artisans are skilled in the intricate art of hand-painting umbrellas and parasols, which is a key part of the
umbrella-making process in the region. You can ask them to put a painting on your T-shirt, purse or anything else you would like for a very reasonable fee. You can choose your own picture.
The painting skill is typically passed down through generations, and many of the artists have been honing their craft for years. It is fascinating to watch the artists at work in their workshops.
