Hello everyone… I know I started out last week by talking about getting back to normal. I had no idea Round 2 was coming. For those of you not living in Chiang Mai it’s hard to put into words what transpired here last week. Only one week after setting the all-time record at 4.95 meters at the Narawat bridge in the city,
Round 2 hit us and obliterated that record. Now the record is 5.30 meters, or nearly 14” higher, and the extent of the resulting flooding was almost unimaginable. It will take a long time to recover from this one, both physically and mentally. Some people may never recover. It’s a sobering reminder of the power of Mother Nature, and of our inability to control her. At the same time, it brings out the best in
people. In my neighborhood, which has never flooded before, we met many of our neighbors for the first time as we waded through the neighborhood in thigh-deep water, all of us basically resigned to our fate. There was a surreal side to it as well. Despite the disaster unfolding before us, people maintained a surprising sense of humor. I joked to one neighbor we should set up a barbeque in the flooded street and have a party. After all, there wasn’t much else we
could do at the time, why not make the best of it? I think if there is ever something like this predicted in the future that’s exactly what I’m going prepare to do. Now, however, neighbors are helping neighbors they didn’t know before, and I think it’s safe to say we will be better neighbors than we were before. Maybe that’s the silver lining in all this. So now we have the aftermath to deal with. A lot of
people in Chiang Mai had just finished cleaning up after the first one a week ago. I feel for them, I really do. This was so much worse, and affected so many more people, but for those who suffered a week ago it had to be an absolute nightmare. Every time I think of complaining I will remember them, and count my blessings. I want to thank all of you who took the time in the midst of the worst of it to properly cancel
your Saturday Breakfast reservations. To be fair, I gave everyone a pass on this one, cancellation or not. That’s it for this week. I apologize for not having updates on our various activities for you but we will catch up as soon as we can. Please be safe. -Kent
Member Survey - Important!
The recent flooding as severely impacted most of us. As we struggle to clean up the mud and repair the damage, many of us are also faced with replacing items that were destroyed by the floodwater. Those are big challenges, and in many cases expensive ones. Our dilemma is this. The annual picnic/BBQ has seen a total halt in
ticket sales, most likely due to having other, more important things to worry about at the moment. The problem is the event is right around the corner and we need to make a decision about it now. If you live in the Chiang Mai area PLEASE take a moment and answer these 2 questions.

No General Meeting for October
Due to the extensive damage to the Duangtawan Hotel caused by the recent flooding the hotel is closing for the remainder of the month to do repairs. This close to the event we have decided the wise thing to do is cancel the meeting for this month, so our next General Meeting will be on November 23rd. Tickets purchased for the October
meeting will be honored at the November meeting. If you are unable to attend the November meeting please email us at info@chiangmaiexpatsclub.com for a refund. Thanks for your understanding.
|
IMPORTANT NOTICE At this time the November Saturday Breakfast falls on the same day as the Annual Picnic/BBQ. Doing both events on the same day is not possible, and a decision has not yet been made whether there will be an alternate date for the Breakfast. If an alternate date is selected we will notify you here and provide a button to make reservations. Stay tuned!

CEC Annual Picnic/BBQ November 2
Get ready for our biggest event of the year. We're returning to the spectacular Horizon Village Resort for an honest to goodness western picnic and BBQ, catered by our friends at The Duke's. There's something for everyone at Horizon, from just enjoying the gorgeous grounds, to visiting the zoo (a big hit with the
kids!), swimming, guided tours through the entire resort, and more. We'll also have a variety of table games to relax and enjoy, a full bar, and live music. It's a great way to spend the day! A big hit in recent years has been the Golf Ball Drop, the annual fundraiser for children's charities conducted by the Chiang Mai Rotary Club, and we're doing it again this year. Buy your numbered ball (there's only 300 so your odds
of winning are far better than the lottery!), and if it ends up closest to the marker after being dropped from a hot air balloon you win 30,000 baht. Second prize is 10,000 baht, third prize is 5,000 baht. We'll publish a link here next week to buy your ball(s), then come join the fun. And don't forget, there's hot air balloon on the ground for kids to play in, and up-and-down rides for kids of all ages in the Ball Drop balloon. A full menu will be published next week, along with a list of the optional activities (and cost) offered by the resort. Use the button below to buy your tickets now and beat the rush!

A couple of months ago at our General Meeting, Chris Smith, who heads up the Geeks Club in Chiang Mai, and who is perhaps our longest tenured active member (#21 out of 2000+), started our Learning Series with an interesting and informative look at A.I. The presentation was videoed and we thought you might like to take a look at it, particularly if you were not there to
experience it in person. Enjoy!
Tax info for U.S. Citizens
The **FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report)** filing deadline is **April 15**, the same as the U.S. federal tax return deadline. If you miss the April 15 deadline, the IRS automatically grants an extension until **October 15** without the need for a formal request.
The FBAR must be filed by U.S. persons who have foreign financial accounts
with a combined value exceeding $10,000 at any time during the calendar year. Filing is done electronically through the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) using FinCEN Form 114.
No additional extensions are typically granted beyond October 15.
Tax Filing and Personal Tax planning is still keeping American International Tax Advisers team busy during this time of year. Feel free to contact Chris by email or call 094-681-9734 for a free consultation. TestimonialThe AITax Advisers were knowledgeable about the unique challenges and requirements for expats, and they helped
me navigate the complexities of filing my taxes from abroad. They were also able to identify deductions and credits that I wasn't aware of, which ended up significantly reducing my tax bill.Overall, the process was much smoother than I anticipated, and I feel confident that my taxes were filed accurately and in compliance with all US tax laws. I will definitely be using this service again in the future and recommending it to other expats in my
network. |

American International Tax Advise Seminar
Hosted by CMCC
Mr.Thomas Carden of the American International Tax Advisors, in Bangkok, has agreed to give a presentation to anyone interested in learning more about the new Thai tax laws that were enacted in 2023 for tax foreigners living in Thailand. This Tax law became effective on 1 January 2024. If you have questions about how to prepare for this new tax on foreigners in Thailand, Mr. Carden will be able to answer those questions. We will meet this Saturday, the 28th of September, on the 2nd floor of the Raintree Building at 2 p.m. There is no charge for this question-and-answer time, but be aware that they are looking for new clients to do things like register for your tax ID number and prepare the necessary papers you need to file for the 2024 tax period. They may make a pitch
for that, but you are under no obligation just because you attended this free Q&A. Please come if you have questions. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided.
You are welcome to arrive without registering due to the short
notice we've given, but if you plan to attend and could email Visual Credits: AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL TAX ADVISERS, Bangkok |
